There have been 588 personal bests from just 612athletes, over the past 12 years from 60m to marathon. Of those, 57 have been competing in athletics for several years prior to joining our group.
2012 has started well with Samantha winning the Cliveden XC in Taplow, the Woodcote 10k and Black Park Park Run 5k, then, Nicole, Helen, Samantha, Chrissie and Dan came a 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th at their county XC championships. Sam Maguire came close at the South of England Indoor Champs with 4th in a PB (8.41) over 60m hurdles while Emily also set a new personal best when finishing 6th in the final of the 400m indoors.
At the South of England XC Championships Millie was 13th Samantha was 16th and Nicole was 21st (only a week after having had to drop out of the County Schools champs with a rib injury, beating all the girls who’d finished in front of her the week before) while Jack Tyler & Dan Thorne were 65th and 67th out of large field of 745 runners.
At the British University (BUCS) Cross Country Championships in Cardiff, Millie was 31st out of 347, Nicole was 6th (2nd U17) at the Schools Inter-County X C Championships in Essex, while Jack Gradwell took over 2 sec’s off of his 400m personal best when running at the London Indoor Games at Lea Valley.
At the UKA National Indoor Championships Millie was 8th in the 1500 in an indoor PB, while Matt Dorrington, Neville Harris and Joe Vaughn all ran indoor 400m PB’s at the Inter-Varsity match for Brunel. Millie also won both the 800m & 1500m at the annual RAF v British Universities match, Matt, won the 400 and 4 x 200m relay, while Neville and Joe both ran indoor 400m pb’s and Melody Kane set a new 1500m indoor pb too.
Samantha despite a bad cold, still came 3rd in the Wokingham ½ marathon
2011 started well, with Nicole Swaffield winning the county XC champs by half a minute! Khalid took the bronze at the U20 South of England Indoors in a pb, Lauren Longhurst and Nicola Gibson both ran 5 personal bests each indoors while Richard Weaver set new WSEH masters club records and was ranked UK No. 3 over 1500 and 6th over 800m indoors. Nicole recovered from a hip injury to come 6th at the National Inter-Counties XC Championships. Khalid won his county indoor champs over 1500m in a new CPB and the following week also took the team bronze at the South of England Road Relays.
Rory Graham-Watson opened his season with a 400m pb (49.61) to win the prestigious Kinnaird Trophy, while fellow Etonian, Dominic Smith started his season where he left off last year with a 48.57 first 400 of the season followed by running the final leg of the 4 x 400 setting a new club record (3:20.77) along with Sam Maguire who also set PB’s over both the U17 and U20 400m hurdles..
Nicole Swaffield, Ashley Fry & Sam Maguire all won their county championships in personal best times, despite the cool and windy conditions, Rory G-W, Nichole Gibson and Lauren Longhurst all equalled their best times at the county champs too. Rory went on to set yet another personal best over 400m (49.43) despite the windy conditions and having already won the 800 earlier the that afternoon, when winning the 137th edition of the Oxford v Cambridge Match. He also won the 4 x 400 with Cambridge winning the match too by a record margin. Rory was awarded his Cambridge “Blues” for his efforts and was a nice way to sign off his time there in his third and final year at the university.
Rory’s brother Tom, looks set to follow in his brothers footsteps, still only 17 and having taken up athletics only this year Tom has already run 51.53 for 400m with much more to come I’m sure. New comer to the squad is Jemma Colbourne is a sprint hurdler and has already set 4 pb’s since joining the group over 100, 200 and 100m hurdles, with much more to come once she gets her confidence together and Nicole continued to impress with a massive pb over 3000m (10:01.19) putting her UK No.7 and 23 sec’s inside the English Schools Qualifying standard!
Sam Maguire won the English Combined Events Champs in a new personal best, which at the time ranked him European No. 1 and World No. 7 U17 (53.13). Then Sam, Emily, Dominic and Nicole all won their events at the Berkshire schools championships, with Nicole setting another CBP – Championship Best Performance. Nicole, Sam & Dominic were selected for the English Schools.
At the South of England Championships Ben Tyler took the bronze over 1500m, Rory took the silver over 800m in a new PB (1:50.81) and Ashley won the gold running a new PB (52.91) too while Richard Weaver took two silvers over 1500 & 800m at the British Masters Championships setting his 5th WSEH Masters Club Record along the way over 800m with 2:01.09!
Dominic bounced back after struggling to recover from a bad cold to claim bronze at the English Schools over 400m in a new PB and Eton School record of 48.18. Dom had previously equalled the record with 48.5, which had stood since 1964, and off the back of this run has been selected to represent Team GB at the U20 European Championships as part of the 4 x 400m relay team. Nicole was 6th in her first English schools champs over 3000m, while Sam was selected to represent England at the Youth Commonwealth Games over 400m hurdles.
Rich ran four more personal bests to make the finals of both the 800m & 1500m at the World Masters Championships in Sacramento USA, finishing 8th in the 800 with 1:59.79 and 10th in the 1500m with 4:10.46 and a fantastic silver in the 4 x 400m relay!
2010 began with 3 girls in the final of the U17 South of England Indoor 400, with gold, silver & 5th along with 4pb’s on the way to add to the bronze in the senior men’s 800m at the same meet. Then there was another gold at the North of England Indoor champs over 400m (senior women) too.
Harriet Pryke was officially nominated as a contender for the Isle of Mann U21 Female Sportsperson of the year, after setting a 3rd Island Indoor records, while Shelayna Oskan was selected to join the “On camp with Kelly” programme, to be mentored by former double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes and Laura Burke is also being mentored by former World & Olympic 400m hurdles champion and world record holder Sally Gunnell OBE.
Brunel’s women’s team beat Loughborough at the annual inter-varsity indoor match and also won the BUCS (British University & College Sports) Indoor National Championships for the 2nd year running, something never before achieved by Brunel. At the BUCS outdoor championships 5 out of the 6 athletes I had running made their finals winning a gold and silver.
Rory Graham-Watson’s Cambridge team, won the Oxford v Cambridge match with Rory winning the 800m & 4 x 400m.This was an historic team, as Cambridge won both A & B strings in both the men’s and women’s teams, something which has not happened for over 22 years! Rory received his Cambridge blues for his efforts while Richard Weaver (formerly of Oxford Uni) took the bronze at the British Masters Championships with a new WESH club record!
4 out of the 4 athletes we had running won their county school championships over 400m hurdles, 400m, 800m and 3000m. In the 400 Dominic Smith equalled the Eton Collage school record which has stood for over 40 years and Nicole Swaffield set a new 3000m CBP (Championship Best Performance). There was gold & silver at the North of England Championships over 400m and 200, both in PB’s, with another silver and two bronze medals over 400m hurdles and 400m flat at the U20/Senior South of England championships too.
In the U20/23 National championships we had 5 athletes from our group in finals. Rory almost pulled off the shock of the weekend, leading all the way to a blanket finish in which he was eventually 6th, but only 0.9 sec’s from the winner, Laura too was involved in a close finish with just 0.8 separating 1st and 5th in the 400m hurdles, but did set a PB on the way in very windy conditions. Laura has just moved up to this age group, but despite being the youngest and being troubled by a nagging back injury has still shown she is someone to watch out for! Harriet set another PB of 55.76 to come 5th with both Shelayna (400m) and Ashley (400m hurdles) taking the bronze in their finals.
At the National senior championships (and European trials) we had 3 athletes running with Shelayna taking the bronze in the “B” final, while Harriet once again set another 400 PB of 55.62 in the heats. The following weekend at the English Schools T & F Championships out of the 4 athletes we had running, 3 made the final , with 2 getting medals, Laura Burke took the bronze, while after previously not making the final over the past 2 years, Ashley Fry struck gold!
Harriet also made the final of the England senior championships and did the treble at the Isle of Mann Championships taking the 100, 200 and 400m too! Nicole Swaffield in her 1st season training with us not only won the County Champs in a new CBP, but was also 5th in both the National Championships and 5th in the UK Schools Games too with much more to come. Nicole also set our groups 500th pb in her last race of the year, when winning the Alder Valley League Finals and in his last meet of the year Ashley took 2 silvers and Emily a bronze over 400m hurdles at the National Junior League Finals in Derby to cap what’s been another great year for the group!
Next year we will be joined by another great 400m hurdler; Sam McGuire, who took the bronze at the English schools in his 1st year in the age group and I will be working even closer with Danny Hodge, “super coach” to over a dozen English schools hurdlers over the past few years who will be doing all the technical hurdle work, while I will be taking their running sessions so more exciting times ahead. Bring it on!
In 2009 we had the National U 20 indoor champion over 400m and a bronze over 800m, 2 BUCS (British Universities & Collage Sports) National Indoor champions over 800m & 4 x 200m relay along with another 6 finalists from just 10 athletes. A further 3 silvers at the BUCS outdoor National championships over 800m, 4 x 100m & 4 x 400m relay and a bronze over 400m from just 6 finalists with 3 athletes in the women’s 400m final! For the 1st time in Brunel’s history the women’s team won the National indoor title beating the mighty Loughborough University, while the men’s team finish an excellent 2nd.
We had a bronze at the senior Inter-Counties championships by a junior in the 800m a gold in the U17 South of England Championships over 300m hurdles and a silver at the North of England U20 championships over 400m. Shelayna and Laura gained their 1st GB vests and both headed the 2009 UK rankings over 3 distances, Shelayna also took silver in the National U20 400m as well as making the final of the Senior National Championships, while Laura Burke won the U17 300m hurdles title at the English Schools Championships along with a with a silver at the National U17 Championships and gained selection for the European Youth Olympic Festival in Finland finishing 6th in the 3rd fastest ever time by a U17 UK athlete.
Laura also took silver at the Schools World Cup Final in Estonia & gold in the UK Schools Games, while Harriet Pryke took 2 silvers and gold at the NatWest Island Games in Finland over 400, 200 & 4 x 400m. In addition to all this Dan Greene took 2 silvers at the National MENCAP championships over 100 & 200m and another silver the TVAC Special Olympics over 200m.
In 2008 we had 2 National U20 championship finalists, with gold in the 400m. The English Schools 400m champion and a bronze in the U17 South of England Championships too over 300m hurdles. We had the UK No.1 outdoors U20 400 leading time and a 5th place, representing England (Shelayna’s 1st England vest) in the Final of the Youth Commonwealth Games (400m) in Pune, India. Jack Tyler followed his brother Ben winning the London Collage XC individual title in consecutive years, something no one else from the university has done before.
We won the National Preps Schools XC title two years running in 2006/07 (never won by the school prior to my coaching them) along with gold in the National Prep Schools Track & field Championships in the 800m in 2007. While 10 of the South of England U15 girl’s hockey team I worked with made the England Team of 16. We also had a gold at the 2003 British Army Championships over 800m to add to the gold in 2002 BAC over 400m hurdles.
At the English Schools Track & Field championships, although we’ve only ever had 8 athletes compete,, we’ve come back with 7 medals, 4 of them gold’s, along with a silver and 2 bronze! We have had 47 Major International Masters Championships medals (Either European or World indoors and out) with 21 of them gold, 18 silver and 8 bronze. We’ve had 8 World Records, 18 British Records & 68 club records between 7 athletes along with National titles at 10 different distances from 60m to 3000m indoors & 100m to 5000m outdoors between 1998 & 2011. In addition to this all 6 members of my masters group ran their season best (often a PB and or record) at the major event of the year, each year for over 10 years in a row! Something I’m sure many of the current senior GB team would love to be able to say.
The list below outlines just their international masters success, but further medals were won at national, regional and county level too from Ed Roe in 1998 to Richard Weaver in 2011, with Mary Edwards, Val Parsons and Danny Hodge in-between it’s been a fantastic group of talented, dedicated athletes, which I have learnt a lot from too and which I’m sure has helped me immensely with the rest of my athletes.
